David McChesney has visited and photographed scores upon scores of National Parks and understands the pressures faced by gateway communities which are forced to deal with the efforts of over-zealous developers who wish to "cash in" on the large numbers of individuals that visit the jewels of the National Park system on an annual basis. Joshua Tree has dealt with its fair share of speculation and efforts to form local governments in the past. Luckily, there are many, many caring residents who appreciate the Character of their Community and have no desire to turn it over to those who wish to exploit its location and natural gifts for the sake of development and the all mighty dollar.
Because many important decisions are made by local officials (some of whom are appointed to their positions by County politicians who do not even live in the Community) it is very important that the will and desires of the Community be understood and respected. It is not uncommon for votes to take place on significant issues when there is a mere handful of residents in attendance at these meetings.
Currently, members of the Joshua Tree Municiple Advisory Council (MAC), who are appointed by the San Bernadino County Board of Supervisors, are leaning towards voting to establish an exploratory committee to consider ways to fund the costs of applying for formation of a Community Service District (about $15,000). To date, there has been virtually no support for the formation of a CSD. The installation of a limited government in Joshua Tree has been the initiative of two County-appointed MAC members. Friends and Neighbors! One is a retired developer and commercial banker who recently told officials at an important meeting in Joshua Tree that "the heavy development hasn't even begun yet!" He was asked by the other to sit on the MAC. They asked the MAC for permission to examine the "feasibility" of forming a CSD. The idea of "examining the feasibility" of a CSD soon became the effort to install such a government entity. The idea never gained support of the Community.
It is for reasons such as this that David McChesney wishes to establish a method of informing like-minded Joshua Tree residents of the significant issues which threaten the Character of Our Community. He believes strongly that the desires of the Community are not being reflected by the actions of "some" County-appointed officials. The citizens who have addressed the MAC and have expressed that this action is neither in the best interest of the Community nor has the Community supported this action, are simply being ignored. Quite frankly, some do not care if the Community is in favor of forming this limited government...it is simply their will.
David is NOT asking for money or volunteers!
David is asking that those who are concerned about honest representation, over-development, the environment, the accountability of officials, pollution, crime, litter, the night skies, traffic, Community Character, open space and animal corridors, express their interest in protecting Our Community from those who see things differently.
David would like to weave a network and establish a connection between those who are doing honorable work in association with the Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council, the Joshua Tree Chamber of Commerce, the National Parks Conservation Association, the Joshua Tree Community Association, the Andromeda Society, the Joshua Tree Music Festival and Wild West CoyoteFest, Friends of Joshua Tree, Save Joshua Tree, the Joshua Tree Association of Musicians and Songwriters, Tortoise Rescue, the Joshua Tree Clean Team, the Mojave Desert Land Trust, the Joshua Tree Highlands Owners Association, the Monument Manor Homeowners Association, the Morongo Basin Property Association and all Joshua Tree businesses and residents who share a deep concern about the future of Joshua Tree.
The voice of this Community must be reflected in its representatives!
